Visiting Spanish Teacher Scheme
The Visiting Spanish Teacher Scheme is an agreement between the Department of Education (DoE) in Ireland and the Ministry of Education and Culture of Spain (MECS) that aims to address the shortage of qualified Spanish teachers in Ireland.
The scheme, overseen by the Department of Education and implemented by Post-Primary Languages Ireland (PPLI), offers schools the opportunity to recruit highly-qualified Spanish teachers from Spain, for a period of up to two years. Participating teachers have a minimum of two years of experience and are certified Spanish language teachers.
In addition to addressing the shortage of Spanish teachers, the scheme hopes to offer students in Irish post-primary schools the opportunity to learn how to interact with, understand, and respect other cultures. It also gives participating schools the opportunity to develop relationships and conduct exchanges with the Spanish schools that these teachers are coming from. Similar programmes have been running successfully in other jurisdictions for many years.
