A national survey of modern foreign language (MFL) provision and uptake in Irish schools has been commissioned on behalf of the Department of Education and Youth by Post-Primary Languages Ireland and British Council Ireland. The research will gather robust data and student, teacher, and school leadership voices; highlight successful practice; and identify systemic barriers and opportunities to provision of foreign language education. A final report is expected by summer 2026 and the findings will inform the development of the next iteration of Languages Connect: Ireland’s Strategy for Foreign Languages in Education 2017 – 2026.
The research is being conducted by a team in Queen’s University Belfast in the context of an existing project called Language Trends which assesses patterns in language learning, access, and progression.
A communication has been sent by the Department of Education and Youth to all post-primary school leaders with details of surveys and a request to give consent for and share two further surveys with first- and fifth-year students. The deadline for completing surveys is 5 December 2025.
