PPLI recently hosted a two-day workshop on plurilingual and intercultural education, which was a great success. The training event was supported by the European Centre for Modern Languages of the Council of Europe (ECML) and facilitated by two ECML experts, Andrea Young, Professor of English and Language Education at the Faculty of Education and Lifelong Learning (INSPÉ) of the University of Strasbourg and Béatrice Leonforte, French teacher and a trainer at the “Dipartimento per la formazione e l’apprendimento” in Locarno for teachers of French as a second language.
The workshop brought together representatives from across the Irish education sector, including NCCA, Oide, SEC, COGG, initial teacher education providers, and CPD organisers, including the PPLI teaching and learning team. Participants had the opportunity to explore how schools can better support linguistically and culturally diverse learners using ECML frameworks and tools.
Key resources were introduced over the two days, such as the FREPA (Framework of Reference for Pluralistic Approaches) descriptors and the TePa (Teacher Education for Plurilingual and Intercultural Awareness) project. Collaborative activities allowed participants to engage with practical tools designed to promote inclusive, responsive teaching practices and to support the development of plurilingual and intercultural competences across the education system.
The event provided a welcome opportunity for networking and cross-sectoral collaboration. Attendees appreciated the space to reflect, share perspectives, and strengthen their collective capacity to promote inclusive education for all learners.
