Spotlight on Schools: Creating Social Presence in the Online Language Classroom

In this edition of Spotlight on Schools, we explore how a personalised speaking activity can support student confidence, interaction and a sense of community in the online language classroom.

Drawing on an example from a Leaving Certificate Lithuanian online class, the project demonstrates how students can be encouraged to participate more naturally by sharing objects connected to their personal interests. By combining time away from the screen with opportunities for meaningful communication, the activity helps students feel more comfortable speaking, appearing on camera and interacting with their peers.

The approach offers practical ideas that can be adapted to different language teaching contexts, both online and in person.
