New Languages for Leaving Certificate
Posted on Tuesday February 11, 2020
Following the 0061/2019 circular of the Department of Education and Skills, PPLI has gathered Expressions of Interest from schools regarding the introduction of Mandarin Chinese, Lithuanian, Polish, and Portuguese for Leaving Certificate as well as the further development of Transition Year and Short Course Chinese programmes. PPLI also explored the interest and potential among teachers interested in teaching the new languages. The expression of interest form for teachers attracted a large volume of Irish, Brazilian, Chinese, Lithuanian, Polish and Portuguese potential candidates. Communication with selected candidates helped establish a teacher profile. It will be used to help PPLI and schools to identify and recruit qualified teachers, inform teaching and learning needs, facilitate the design and delivery of CPD and training, and help define appropriate pathways to becoming qualified teachers of the new languages in Ireland. At the moment, we are finalising the formal application for teachers and continually working with schools to support the planning of the new programmes. Classroom resources are being created; Information will be available online in the coming months. If you have any feedback or queries, please let us know.
