MFL Consultation Sessions: Let's Talk Languages!
PPLI offers consultation opportunities to schools that feel they would benefit from a session of reflection and future planning around language provision.
These MFL consultation sessions are held in schools, typically last 90 minutes, and benefit from the attendance of a cross-section of school personnel, including senior management, guidance counsellors, TY programme coordinators, and MFL coordinators.
The sessions provide a structured opportunity not only to reflect on current language provision, but also to explore all opportunities available to students, including Leaving Certificate language classes on Saturdays and #ThinkLanguages Week, and to incorporate future planning for language learning across the school.
What are the aims of an MFL consultation session?
These sessions are designed to:
Recognise existing good practice around language provision within your school
Promote inclusive practices that recognise and value the linguistic diversity of all students
Facilitate strategic planning for Transition Year (TY) and beyond, ensuring language learning is visible and accessible to every student
Encourage reflective dialogue aligned with the Looking at Our School quality framework, through an SSE-style conversation with a PPLI Education Officer
Support schools in evaluating and expanding their language pathways, including heritage languages and non-curricular language experiences
Consultation sessions address questions your school may have, such as:
How can we support the uptake of languages already on offer in our school?
What future activities or supports could help us build a more inclusive language environment?
How can we include students who do not currently study languages?
What opportunities exist to support heritage language speakers in our school?
How can we increase language provision during TY and beyond?
Are we making the most of initiatives like Leaving Certificate Language Classes on Saturdays and #ThinkLanguages?
Do we cater for students who speak other curricular and non-curricular languages?
