Update on Implementation of New Leaving Cert Language Specifications

Language Counties No of Schools
Chinese Dublin, Kildare, Cork 15
Lithuanian Dublin, Monaghan 6
Polish Cork, Dublin, Kildare, Galway 17
Portuguese Galway, Waterford 2

We are delighted to provide an update on the implementation of the new language specifications. Forty schools have taken the opportunity to provide Chinese, Lithuanian, Polish or Portuguese.

Most of the schools that have engaged for Mandarin Chinese will commence with a TY module focussing primarily on language in order to give students the opportunity to make an informed decision on whether or not they would like to take Chinese language for their Leaving Certificate although three schools will introduce Chinese in 5th year in September.

The schools interested in the other new language specifications are interested in supporting heritage language speakers of the languages and will all commence with 5th year classes. Many of these classes will be provided outside of the regular timetable.

Classes will be provided on Saturdays in Cork and Dublin to provide access to students in these areas who do not have the subject in their schools.

Most of the teachers will be employed by PPLI as an interim measure. Schools will be encouraged to apply for additional allocation via Circular 0006/2020 when registration becomes available with the Teaching Council.
