Flashcards to develop speaking skills

Flashcards to develop speaking

This activity was presented by Tina Killackey (A French and German teacher in Presentation Secondary School, Wexford) at the I love MFL conference in September 2019 in Cork.

The idea is to develop students’ speaking skills but taking into account their ability. The cards are used as prompts and the students can start by making simple sentences to more complex ones with more able students.

Resource 1:

Card sets 1, 2 and 3 are keywords which are there to trigger opinions from students. Teachers can choose which to use with each class, according to knowledge and ability.

Question words card set 1 and 2 are sets of questions words with subtle hints on some. These are great to use in pairs where one student asks questions, so learning how to ask questions, and the other student answers. The different level of the question cards help students with forming the questions.

Resource 2:

The pocket money game can be adapted to other topics.

This is a card game where cards are colored coded. Each colour corresponds to clues.

White cards: for questioning

Red cards: How much and who gives it to you

Pink cards: What you need to do to get pocket money

Purple cards: Purpose of your pocket money (short term)

Orange cards: Purpose of your pocket money (long term)

Green cards: Time expressions

There are different ways of playing the game or using the cards. The following is an example:

  • ¬†All cards are placed upside in their groups on desk.
  • ¬†Student 1 picks 4 white cards (more able student uses single one word cards as prompts / weaker student uses the full questions)
  • Student 2 picks up 4 cards – one from each color
  • The green cards are optional. They can be left face up for students to use if able or appropriate
  • The pair use cards to carry out a dialogue about pocket money and housework
  • They can exchange roles and play again
